Sit at the Head of Your Money Table

Apr 6, 2022 | Learning to talk money

Get this: According to UBS, 98% of widows and divorcees have some advice for you – take an active role in your finances now. Or live with regret later.

That’s not meant to frighten you but, instead, galvanize you into action with greater awareness for the importance of your choices around money. Are you actively participating in your finances or abdicating them? If the latter, consider re-thinking your choice.

Simply put, you need to sit at the head of your own money table. 💸

Besides, what’s the point in fighting for raises and promotions if you don’t take an active role in managing and investing what you work so hard to earn?

You might be surprised to learn that, despite incremental progress, Millennial women are MORE likely to leave investment decisions to their spouses/partners (61%) than older generations (54%).

I don’t understand it.

         I don’t have time.

They know more than I do.

         I have other responsibilities.

         I hate talking about money.

It’s gauche to talk about money.

         It will be fine.

Sound familiar? 🤔

Maybe you’re a trusting person or your mom had a laissez-faire approach to money. Or maybe you haven’t given it much thought yet. Or maybe you’re on top of it and if so, high five! 👏 (Fortunately, I experienced atypical role-modeling early in life: my mother, who was busy raising me and my 8 siblings, made herself the CFO of the family finances. At a tiny desk equipped with a paper ledger and pencil, she monitored and managed every dollar that was earned, spent, saved, donated and invested.)

Wherever you are with your money mindset, resist any urge to be money indifferent or to defer to others because doing so is giving away your power. And a seat at your own money table. It’s also a decision you can’t afford to make because it’s a cycle that’s hard to break.

Don’t do it.
