It’s time for all of us to take a collective breath. The news and political climate have been A LOT to process this year. Let’s use the close of the year to rest and rejuvenate.
In that spirit, I hope you aren’t spending your precious time off scrolling sites for deals, waiting in line, or returning gifts. Instead, I hope you’ll unplug from your devices, enjoy quality time with family and friends, and go outside.
When you’re outside, stress melts away, your mind clears, and your mood brightens. The perfect gift to give yourself.
One of my all-time favorite holiday campaigns launched ten years ago. REI’s Black Friday Opt Outside campaign was more than a clever slogan and ads; it was astonishing. They closed 143 stores, two distribution centers, and their headquarters–paying all 12,000 employees to spend the day outside instead of working– and encouraged customers to do the same.

Empathetic. Generous. Inspiring.
I have made it a habit to get outside for a walk every day. Sometimes it’s with a weighted vest for 5-6 miles. Sometimes it’s without a vest, for much longer. Or if I’m rushed, I’ll tackle a few steep hills and call it a day.

I established a love for walking from my dad. There was nothing he enjoyed more than a brisk walk, no matter the time of year or temperature. This is one of the last pics I have with him, bundled up to head outside to appreciate his neighbor’s holiday decorations.
Sadly, he died of COVID five years ago this month before the vaccine was available. An incredible dad—he made a massive impact on me and countless others. He lived every day being empathetic, generous and inspiring—always with a grateful skip in his step.
So, take some time to reflect on the people who have shaped you. Then put on your gear, face the chill, and opt outside this holiday. You’ll be glad you did.
You’re equipt to feel revved up and ready to go in 2026.
