Job hunting can be exhausting. đ©
You update your resume. You fill out applications. You wait with a sense of optimism and excitement. And thenâŠyou get ghosted. Rinse and repeat. It makes you want to scream into the void.
But landing a job isnât about working harder. Itâs about working smarter.
I sat down with career consultant Dilara Casey to break down what ACTUALLY works when it comes to job hunting in 2025. Dilara has reviewed hundreds of resumes, coached countless job seekers, and knows every trick in the book.
Hereâs some inside scoop to help you! đ
8 tips to land your next job faster:
1. Apply the right way. đ
Too many job seekers skip this fundamental step: Follow the application instructions exactly as the company requires.
Itâs tempting to simply send your resume to a friend inside the company or DM a recruiter, but many companies have strict compliance regulations so make sure you go through the proper channels. If they tell you to apply via their website, do that.
Pro tip: If the company has an employee referral system, ask for the referral link from your contact before you apply. Some systems wonât allow referrals after submission. If they donât get back to you promptly, apply without a link. Time is of the essence!
2. Speed matters. âĄ
Recruiters often stop looking after the first batch of applications. Some listings close once they hit a certain number of applicants (even if the deadline is weeks away!).
Pro tip: If a job excites you, apply within the first 24 hours. The early bird gets the interview.
3. Be an 80% match. đŻ
Itâs common to hesitate when applying for a role if you donât meet all the qualifications. Companies want someone who can hit the ground running, and theyâre typically looking for an 80% skills match.
Pro tip: Whereâs the flex? Years of experience. If you have the skills but are a little shy in the years, go for it. If you lack industry experience, consider adjacent industries where your knowledge transfers.
4. Write your resume for the job you want. âïž
Most people write their resumes based on their current job instead of the one they want.
Pro tip: Ditch weak verbs like helped and assisted. Own your contributions with power verbs like led, managed, and spearheaded. Make sure every bullet point shows impact.
5. Optimize your LinkedIn. đ
Your LinkedIn profile is a recruiterâs search tool.
- Your skills section = SEO for recruiters. Keep it updated.
- Your banner should highlight your expertise, not your title.
- Your job titles and dates should match your resume (mismatches raise red flags!).
Pro tip: If youâre job hunting, consider LinkedIn Premium (or ask your employer to cover it if youâve been let go). It gives you access to job insights and analytics and makes your profile more visible to recruiters.
6. Donât wing the interview. đ€
Whatâs the difference between those who get offers and those who donât? Interview practice.
- Research the company and its strategic priorities
- Prepare clear, compelling answers to common questions with specific examples
- Have thoughtful questions ready to ask the interviewer(s) (Need help? Check out this newsletter!)
- Practice with a friend or coach. The first time you say an answer out loud should not be in the interview. Practice builds confidence.
Pro tip: Bring multiple copies of your resume to an in-person meeting. Create a leave-behind document after your first interviewâa concise summary of your qualifications or portfolio. You can also send it as a follow-up.
7. Network strategically. đ€
Job hunting can be isolating, so donât do it alone.
- Join a support group ( e.g., Slack channels for people laid off, professional associations, or groups like Never Search Alone)
- Reach out to professionals in roles you aspire toâmost people will say âyesâ to a 15-minute chat
- Use the networking chain effect: After every conversation, ask, âIs there someone else youâd recommend I speak with?â
Pro tip: Keep your network warm. Even if youâre not job searching, check in with people occasionally. Donât reach out only when you need something.
8. Mindset matters. đ§ââïž
Job hunting is tough, but the people who land jobs fastest stay proactive, optimistic, and adaptable.
Pro tip: Set small, daily goals (whether applying to one role, reaching out to one person, or practicing one interview question).
You will land your next role. But the path may not look exactly how you imagined. Stay open to opportunities you hadnât considered, refine your approach, and keep showing up.
